Radio Amateurs of Canada
Equipment Questionaire | RAC Application

Introduction

This program is designed for Radio Amateurs of Canada members who need insurance coverage on their personal radios and related equipment. It assists individual members who have found that their home insurance does not provide adequate coverage and those who are now insured through the United States, but prefer buying Canadian. By inquiring with The Insurance Centre, this program can give you piece of mind on items used in conjunction with RAC.

QWho is eligible for the plan?
Any RAC affiliate club who has not more than two claims in the last five years. If your club is not a RAC member, please contact the RAC Head Office. Once you become a member, you are then eligible for these low cost, affordable coverages.

QWhat does the plan cover?
The plan has two segments ...

  1. All risk insurance, including theft, on all the property owned by a chapter, including any improvements made by the chapter to the premises it occupies
  2. One million dollars comprehensive commercial liability coverages with extensions to cover ...
    • any legal liability arising from the ownership or operation of any radio or other electronic signal, and
    • any legal liability arising from the unintentional inaccurate transmitting of information during a civil emergency, or the failure to transmit information during the same.

QDoes the plan have any exclusions?
To the property coverages, the normal exclusions apply such as damage caused by wear and tear, dishonesty by the chapter members themselves, property you do not own, money or precious stones or metals, flood or seepage or water damage from rain, and earthquake. Furthermore, antennas exceeding thirty meters in height are excluded (specific coverages for these can be purchased through the Insurance Centre).

Under the liability wording there is no coverage for any legal liability arising from the interference with any radio or electronic signal used in the operation, guidance, control, navigation, communications, or any way, of aircraft, spacecraft or any water or land borne vessel or vehicle. The same exclusion applies for interference with any medical device.

Liability is also excluded for intentionally transmitting inaccurate information during a civil emergency, or the intentional failure to transmit information during same, or knowingly transmit any false or fraudulent distress signal; or any legal liability arising from transmission of any language or message in contravention of the Radio Communications Act and its Regulations. Finally, liability, from the serving, or consumption of alcoholic beverages is excluded.

QAre there any deductibles or other limitations that apply?
The property coverages are subject to a deductible of $500 per occurrence, with the exception of antennas/aerials to which a deductible of $1,000 applies.

Under the liability sections a deductible of $500 applies for property damages only.

Benefits under the property coverages are limited to a 50% of the replacement value if equipment and antennas are not properly protected by power surge and lightning arresters called for by the warranty wording forming part of the policy wording.

Finally, it is a policy requirement that in order to be adequately covered, the amount of insurance carried should be at least 90% of the replacement value of the property owned and the premise's improvements you have made.

QDoes the plan cover equipment temporarily taken off premises?
Yes, the plan automatically covers these items for up to 20% of the face amount of insurance you elected to be covered for. For this coverage to be in effect, the items must be in a locked vehicle, or a locked compartment.

QDoes the plan have any other automatic extensions?
Yes, the plan automatically provides additional coverages based on the percentage of the face amount indicated below:

  • Items in transit by mail or common carrier (10%)
  • Additional expense incurred as the result of a fire, wind, or water damage loss (20%)
  • Burglary damage done to the building you rent ($2,500)
  • Tenants legal liability ($100,000)

QOn what basis are claims settled under the plan?
Subject to the RAC power surge and lightning arrester warranty earlier referred to, any insured claim will be paid on a replacement value basis, unless the item insured is obsolete, in which case the actual cash value will be paid.

QHow does the insurance company know what we own?
Insurance is based on mutual good faith. Normally, your word will be accepted that average coverages were bought. However, the company does reserve the right to check your inventory of equipment to ascertain the same. It is hence recommended that adequate records of your inventory are kept in a safe place.

QIf we sign up for the plan, will we get our own policy?
You will receive a certificate containing all the policy wordings. This certificate is an extension of the master policy held by the Radio Amateurs of Canada, and forms a part of that policy. In case of discrepancy, the RAC master policy governs.

QHow do we obtain information, a quote and/or enroll?
By fully completing the application. Either fill it out electronically, or print it, fill it out by hand, and mail it to us.

QWhat is the cost of the plan?
By using the RAC group purchasing power, costs have been kept to a minimum. They are based on the amount of contents/tenants improvements you own; the size of your chapter; fire protection, and the amount of activities you are involved in. To give you an indication of cost, if you are on water/sewer and only need the minimum plan of $15,000 on contents and tenants improvements, the annual cost is $375.00 plus $25.00 per $1,000 value of towers/aerials. If you are within 5 miles from a fire hall, the cost would be $375.00 plus $25.00 per $1,000 value of towers/aerials. Actual cost will vary depending on your particular situation.

Ontario residents should add 8% PST.

QWhen are coverages effective?
The effective date of the plan is the date indicated by you on your application. Coverages are in force the moment your application and premium is received by The Insurance Centre Inc. - Thomson Jemmett Vogelzang If coverages are to be bound immediately, you may fax or e-mail an application to (613) 549-3833. In that case benefits will be bound as of the moment the fax is received, provided your premium arrives at The Insurance Centre Inc.'s address within 10 working days.

QOur current plan does not expire in the near future. Can we still join now?
Considering the uniqueness of the coverages covered, and it's reasonable cost, you may find it to your advantage to cancel your existing policy prior to it's expiry date. Keep in mind, you may not receive a fully proportionate refund for the unused portion of your policy. It is best to check with your existing insurer to weigh the cancellation implications.

Q Can we purchase just the property coverages?
In certain situations, yes. Please contact us for further information.

QWhere can we get additional information about the plan?
RAC's Insurance Broker is The Insurance Centre Inc. - Thomson Jemmett Vogelzang They have negotiated the plan at Lloyds of London on behalf of RAC and it's members.
